Birth baby and beyond...

About Katie

Katie Brown is a Yoga teacher and a pre-and-post natal Yoga specialist. She holds classes and workshops on the Northern Beaches of Sydney and lives with her husband Alec, her son, Lucas, daughter, India, and new arrival Leo (born December 2007).

Katie trained with the IYTA (International Yoga Teachers' Association) and teaches Hatha Yoga and a unique blend of other styles. Katie also has a diploma in body massage, anatomy and physiology (ITEC) and is a certified instructor with Infant Massage Australia (IMA). She is currently furthering her studies with the Optimum Birth Doula diploma course.

“I have been practising Yoga since I was a child. I've always loved the way the postures and breathing help me feel relaxed and calm.

After leaving university, I became a journalist, at first I worked on a daily newspaper and then worked as a magazine writer. I spent the next few years travelling, writing and practising Yoga. In 1999, I moved to Sydney from the UK. I found work as a magazine editor, taking time out to attend as many yoga classes as I could, and trained with the IYTA.

I was already teaching Yoga part-time when I fell pregnant with Lucas. After his birth, I found myself increasingly drawn to Yoga – and the fabulous benefits the practice offered, not just to me, but to my entire family!

As a new mother, I could see just how important post-natal Yoga was. I also developed a routine of baby Yoga and learnt infant massage.

I love teaching pre-natal Yoga and I want to share my knowledge with other new mums and dads. I understand how tough it is as a new mother - I had a career change and had to cope with the death of my mum, just a few months before I became pregnant with Lucas.

When you become a new mother, your life spins around. Your relationships change, your perception of who you are and how others view you changes, you often have to cope on one wage, and you find yourself in a new environment rather than the workplace. Then you have the sleep deprivation, physical issues about body shape and, of course, a new baby. You need all the help and support you can get.

I continue to write and research articles and mainly work for parenting and health titles.

My first book, Mother Me helps mothers adjust to their new role, keeping balance, harmony and wellbeing in their life. It is structured as a self-guided course which you can take at your own leisure, either by yourself or with a group.
